Belz Hasidim Celebrate Rare Pidyon Haben Ceremony for Elderly Devotee in Bnei Brak
A unique and emotional Pidyon Haben (redemption of the firstborn son) ceremony is set to take place today at the Belz Hasidic synagogue in Bnei Brak. The event will honor an elderly Hasid named David, who, it was recently discovered, had never undergone the Pidyon Haben ritual since birth. This revelation came to light during a conversation among the community members and was brought to the attention of the Belz Rebbe, who was deeply moved by the omission of this important Torah commandment.
The Rebbe immediately took action to arrange the ceremony without delay. Complex halachic questions arose regarding how to conduct the Pidyon Haben for an adult in such a sensitive situation, including who should recite the blessings and the proper order of the ritual. After consulting with leading halachic authorities within the Hasidic community, the Rebbe invited the Spinka Kahana Rebbe, who also serves as a Rosh Yeshiva in the Belz community, to act as the Kohen Poded (the priest who redeems the firstborn) and oversee the ceremony.
The event will take place this morning following the Shacharit prayer service, with many Hasidim gathering to celebrate David’s fulfillment of this mitzvah after decades. A festive meal will follow the ceremony in the synagogue hall, attended by several rebbes, marking the rare occasion and symbolically lifting a longstanding spiritual obligation from David. The Belz community is known for its warmth and openness, embracing individuals from all walks of life with personal care and love, which was evident in their swift response to this matter.
