The story · English

Thousands of followers of the Sanz-Kloiznburg Hasidic dynasty convened last week in the large study hall of their main synagogue in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn to commemorate the yahrzeit (anniversary of passing) of the late Sanz-Kloiznburg Rebbe. The central prayer service and festive meal, known as a tish, were led by the current Rebbe, his son, who also conducted a major completion of the Talmud (siyum hashas) during the event.

A prominent guest at the tish was the well-known philanthropist Rabbi Yosef Aryeh Briner, who purchased the honor of reciting the Birkat Hamazon (Grace After Meals). He honored the Rebbe’s in-laws, Rabbi Pinchas Friedman, by performing the ritual of pouring the cup, and the groom, Chanoch Zundel Friedman, who was recognized for having memorized over 800 pages of Talmud orally, was honored with the elevation of the cup.

During the gathering, special certificates of recognition were awarded to dozens of outstanding yeshiva students who successfully passed rigorous oral exams covering thousands of pages of Talmud, Rashi, and Tosafot commentaries. Numerous other rebbes and rabbis attended to offer blessings and congratulations to the Rebbe on this significant occasion, including the Skulen Rebbe, the Liska Rebbe, and the Gaavad of Serdaheli.

The event highlighted the deep commitment to Torah study and tradition within the Sanz-Kloiznburg community and reinforced ties among prominent Hasidic leaders and supporters. Photographs from the celebration were taken by the Lentschowski brothers, documenting the large turnout and spiritual atmosphere.

The community will continue its annual observance of the Rebbe’s yahrzeit with further study sessions and prayers in the coming days.
