US and Iran Agree to Cease Hostilities in Strait of Hormuz and Resume Talks This Week

The United States and Iran have agreed to halt military strikes in the Strait of Hormuz and to hold a meeting on Tuesday in Doha, Qatar, according to a senior US official who spoke to Axios on Sunday. This development follows earlier reports by The Wall Street Journal that talks scheduled for next week in Switzerland had been canceled. However, a senior US administration source told Walla that the technical discussions will proceed as planned and that coordination channels established after the Swiss summit are already active to prevent further clashes.

Earlier on Sunday, the US military completed a series of strikes against Iranian military targets in response to an Iranian drone attack on an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles toward Kuwait and Bahrain. An IRGC spokesperson warned that Tehran would respond more severely to any further violations of the ceasefire by the US, as reported by SNN.

Additionally, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a commercial vessel near the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz was attacked, damaging the tanker but causing no injuries to the crew. US Central Command (CENTCOM) emphasized that it will not allow Iran to target commercial shipping in the region.

This agreement to cease hostilities and resume diplomatic talks comes amid heightened tensions and recent military exchanges in the strategically critical waterway, underscoring efforts to de-escalate the conflict and maintain maritime security.
