US-Iran Negotiations Resume in Doha to De-escalate Strait of Hormuz Tensions

After several days of heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, negotiations between the United States and Iran are set to resume on Tuesday in Doha, Qatar. The talks aim to reduce recent escalations and return to the negotiating table to reach lasting agreements that could end the ongoing conflict. Steve Witkoff, former special envoy for Middle East affairs under President Donald Trump, has arrived in Qatar to participate in the discussions.

According to an Iranian official cited by Reuters, the focus of the talks will be on managing the Strait of Hormuz and establishing mechanisms to prevent further escalation, differing from previous discussions held in Switzerland weeks earlier. Another Iranian official noted that technical talks will also take place concurrently between the Iranian delegation and representatives from Qatar and Pakistan.

Iranian President Masoud Pezhkian tweeted that any agreement requires mutual commitment, stating, "If the American side commits to the memorandum of understanding, we will fulfill our obligations." He emphasized a rational and respectful approach to decision-making and a firm defense if necessary. Meanwhile, President Trump confirmed that Iran requested the meeting and that both sides have agreed to a ceasefire, allowing free movement of vessels and a reduction in hostilities.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Lewitt told Fox News that Witkoff and Jared Kushner will travel to Doha to lead the negotiations, accompanied by technical talks. She warned that violations of the ceasefire would be met with force and stressed the benefits for Iran in signing a good deal, including lower fuel prices and avoiding isolation or conflict with the US military.

The ceasefire agreement follows two nights of military escalation in the Gulf, including US strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz and retaliatory Iranian attacks on American positions in the region. Prior technical talks in Switzerland had been frozen amid the rising tensions.
