He enlisted in the IDF in 1952, volunteering for the Paratroopers, and served in various command roles, including commanding the Nahal's 50th Battalion from 1962 to 1965. Nadel participated in retaliatory operations in the 1950s and fought in the Battle of Mitla during Operation Kadesh, receiving a commendation. He commanded the Paratroopers Brigade from 1969 to 1971 and led a reserve paratrooper brigade during the Yom Kippur War, during which two of its battalions captured the Syrian Hermon. Nadel himself was wounded in that battle. He later commanded the "HaMafetz" Division and served as president of the Military Court of Appeals until 1983. After his military service, Nadel pursued higher education, earning degrees in business administration from MIT, and in general history and political science from Bar-Ilan University, as well as a master's in general history from Tel Aviv University and a doctorate from the University of Haifa. He authored books on IDF security and military activity between the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War, and on military leadership. In 2006, he was appointed to the Winograd Commission investigating the Second Lebanon War. The IDF Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, and other senior military officials expressed their condolences. Nadel's funeral is scheduled for Friday at the Kiryat Shaul Military Cemetery, preceded by a military ceremony.
