The Maccabi Tel Aviv volleyball team has signed Brazilian contractor Leonardo Nascimento, known as Leoziño, as their third foreign player from Brazil. Leoziño joins fellow Brazilians Danilo Galinski and Renato Santos, who were recruited earlier in the summer. This marks the first time in the team's history, since the league allowed three foreign players, that all foreign players hail from the same country. The previous instance of this occurred in the 2012/13 season, also with two Brazilian foreign players.
Leoziño, 31, stands at 2.01 meters and arrives from Turkish club Sport Club Istanbul. He has prior experience playing in Greece for PAOK Thessaloniki, in France for Montpellier, and with other top clubs in Brazil and Turkey. He will replace Nikita Axioutine, who was signed in the summer but released due to injury.
Maccabi Tel Aviv coach Gal Galili expressed optimism about the new signing, stating, "Leoziño is a player with good abilities and European experience. He is a contractor who will contribute to us beyond offense in other aspects of the game. We will need some time until he gets into full playing shape, but we expect him to play a significant role in the team this season." Leoziño stated after signing, "I am very happy to be here and join Maccabi Tel Aviv. I was warmly welcomed by the team and staff, and I hope to contribute to the team in our work to win and achieve our goals on the court."
