IAEA Chief Calls for Urgent Tight Monitoring in Iran

Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said on Tuesday at a press conference in Japan that Iran needs an advanced verification system as soon as possible to ensure it does not develop nuclear weapons.

Grossi said the purpose of any agreement between the United States and Iran is to guarantee that no nuclear weapons are produced in Iran. He added that Iran’s government has clearly said it does not intend to build such weapons, but stressed that intentions alone are not enough.

His remarks underline the need for stronger oversight and verification in Iran in order to confirm compliance and prevent weapons development.
