Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has unveiled a new drone defense system called HawkGuard at the AUSA 2026 security exhibition in Washington D.C. The system is designed to counter the growing threat of explosive-laden drones on the battlefield. Unlike traditional systems that use missiles or explosives, HawkGuard employs other drones to physically intercept and neutralize attacking drones without using warheads.

The development comes amid an intense technological race to find effective and affordable solutions for the drone threat, highlighted by conflicts in Ukraine and against Hezbollah. These conflicts have demonstrated the difficulty in combating small, inexpensive drones that can inflict significant damage on tanks and armored vehicles. HawkGuard integrates radar, electro-optical sensors, and an AI-based command and control system to detect, track, and engage aerial threats.

IAI states that HawkGuard can handle multiple threats simultaneously and is designed for low-cost interception. Its compact, modular design allows for installation on armored vehicles and securing strategic infrastructure, including naval platforms. The system has completed a series of tests, demonstrating its capability to neutralize various drone threats, though it is not yet confirmed if it has entered operational service or been acquired by any military.

IAI CEO Guy Barlev emphasized that HawkGuard adds a new interception capability to multi-layered defense systems, providing advanced, flexible, and precise solutions. Elta CEO and IAI Executive Vice President Dror Bar added that the system offers a cost-effective and flexible response to point defense against attacking drones and other local threats, integrating detection, control, and interception capabilities with AI.

This new system addresses concerns raised by a research team at the Institute for Counter-Terrorism at Reichman University, led by Dr. Uzi Landau. In November 2024, the team warned that existing defense methods were insufficient against mass, multi-vector drone attacks, potentially overwhelming the IDF's current defenses. They highlighted challenges in detecting low-flying drones, the economic disparity between attacking and intercepting drones, and slow adoption of new solutions by the defense establishment.
