Twelve people, including teachers and students from the junior high school at Orot High School in Ma'alot, were injured on Sunday by a powerful explosion of old ammunition in an agricultural area near Mitzpe Perah, close to Kibbutz Yiftah in the Ramim Ridge. The IDF declared a mass casualty incident (MCI) due to the severity and number of casualties. Security, rescue, and medical forces, along with MDA evacuation helicopters, were dispatched to the complex scene to provide initial medical treatment and evacuate the injured.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, upon hearing of the incident, was forced to cancel his planned schedule for the day. He was on his way to a pre-arranged tour but had to turn back to his Jerusalem office at the last minute. Additionally, Netanyahu was scheduled to appear on the "Patriots" program that evening, but this appearance has been postponed.

Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir also canceled a planned political statement for Sunday evening due to the incident.

Initial reports suggest the explosion occurred when someone accidentally stepped on or kicked an unexploded ordnance (UXO), triggering it. The explosive material inside detonated with great force, causing blast injuries and severe shrapnel wounds to those nearby. The condition of the injured is described as serious and complex. One person was critically injured and receiving prolonged resuscitation efforts, three others were in serious condition, four were in moderate condition and fully conscious, and the rest sustained minor injuries.
