Israel's Health and Environmental Protection Ministries issued urgent warnings and guidelines due to dangerously high benzene levels near the Haifa Bay refineries. Classes were canceled at two nearby schools, and residents within a kilometer were advised to stay indoors and close windows. Israel's Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environmental Protection have issued urgent public guidelines following the detection of unusually high benzene concentrations near the Haifa Bay refineries complex. The Ministry of Health, in consultation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and in coordination with the Kiryat Ata municipality, ordered the immediate suspension of classes for the next 24 hours at the Social High School and the "Erezim" school, both located near the refinery complex. Students will be relocated to alternative sites. Additionally, the ministries are advising the general public within a one-kilometer radius of the refineries, especially children and pregnant women, to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity. Workers in the industrial zone are advised to close windows and use air conditioning. These elevated levels are attributed to ongoing periodic maintenance and damage repair work at the refineries, which were impacted during the recent war. Extremely high concentrations of the carcinogen benzene were measured over the weekend of October 9-10, 2026, at an environmental monitoring station near the "Dshanim" industrial zone in Kiryat Ata, and subsequently at the "Old Licensing Office" monitoring station in Haifa. While a temporary decrease was noted this morning, levels began to rise again in the afternoon. In response, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has ordered an immediate halt to the maintenance work at the complex, demanding a thorough investigation and a detailed prevention plan from the refinery management as a condition for resuming operations. The ministries stated that a reassessment will be conducted based on updated monitoring data, and the public will be informed accordingly. Concurrently, the Ministry of Environmental Protection reiterated its commitment to implementing the government's decision and National Outline Plan 75 to cease petrochemical industry activity in Haifa Bay and promote green environmental development in the area.
