A new study reveals that the cost of groceries in Israel has significantly increased over the past four years, with a basket of 80 common products seeing price hikes of up to 20% since September 2022. The research, conducted by Professor Itai Atar and doctoral student Adi Omer from Tel Aviv University, analyzed prices across approximately 700 supermarket branches.

The most dramatic price jump was observed in Elite's milk chocolate bar, with a 100-gram package increasing by 77.9% in neighborhood supermarkets, from 5.21 shekels to 9.26 shekels. Discount chains saw a 57.6% rise for the same product. Other staple items also experienced sharp price increases, including a 31% rise for Adanot cheese borekas in neighborhood stores, a 26% increase for Taster's Choice instant coffee, and an 18% hike for Sugat jasmine rice in discount chains.

Significant price variations were also found between different supermarket chains. Shufersal Deal saw its basket price increase by 22.7% over four years, while Shufersal Online experienced a 24% rise. In contrast, Rami Levy had the lowest price increase at 10.3%, maintaining its position as the cheapest chain among those surveyed, followed by Yohananof.

The researchers argue that rising costs of utilities, fuel, and taxes alone do not account for the full extent of the price increases. They suggest that a decline in public attention to the cost of living has made it easier for companies to raise prices. Professor Atar warned that without government intervention and increased competition, consumers will continue to face higher prices at the checkout.
