Israeli judoka Raz Hershko has reached the quarterfinals of the World Judo Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, in the over 78 kg category. The 28-year-old, who is ranked number one in the world in her weight class, is a favorite to win a medal and is aiming for her first gold at the event. Hershko previously won a bronze medal at the 2023 World Championships and a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She is also the reigning European champion, having won gold in 2024.

Hershko received a bye to the second round, where she defeated Taiwan's Liang Ping Chang in just 58 seconds by submission. In the round of 16, she faced Estonia's Emma-Melis Aktas, whom she had beaten less than a month prior. After a tough match that went into overtime, Hershko secured the win with a yuko.

Her next opponent in the quarterfinals is Brazil's Beatriz Souza. Although Souza is ranked 20th in the world, she defeated Hershko in the bronze medal match at the Paris Olympics two years ago and has a 6-0 record against the Israeli in official competitions.

Hershko is the 11th and final competitor from the Israeli delegation. She is seeking to secure a second medal for Israel at the championships, following Karem Prrimo's silver medal in the under 63 kg category. The total prize money for the championships is 798,000 euros for individual categories and an additional 200,000 euros for the team competition.
