Former U.S. President Donald Trump fiercely criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee's decision to award the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African lawyer Navi Pillay. Trump asserted that the award should have gone to the United States and himself, claiming he had settled eight wars and achieved numerous other accomplishments. He stated he knew nothing about Pillay except that she "obviously hates Israel." Trump highlighted his role in returning Israeli hostages from Gaza, preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, and overthrowing Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro. He also cited increasing NATO contributions from 2% to 5% of GDP, freeing over 900 political prisoners in Eastern Europe, securing the release of 196 hostages globally, and fostering a prosperous Arctic. Trump declared he deserved not one, but eight Nobel Peace Prizes, quoting last year's laureate Maria Corina Machado who allegedly said he deserved the prize more than anyone else. Trump called the award to Pillay an "indelible stain on Norway" and stated the Nobel Peace Prize is "forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democrats and enemies of civilization."

Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also commented on the award, stating that if there were a prize for lies, hatred, and blood libels, Pillay would be the top favorite due to her "relentless, politically motivated demonization of Israel and promotion of 'genocide lies.'"

Pillay, in her acceptance, dedicated the award to "all victims of international crimes." She noted that human rights are under attack, particularly international legal institutions, referencing U.S. sanctions against the International Criminal Court.
