The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday, October 9, that South African lawyer Navanethem Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts in promoting peace and international law. Pillay, born in South Africa in 1941, began her legal career during apartheid, defending its opponents. She became the first non-white woman to serve on South Africa's High Court in 1995.

Pillay's extensive career includes roles as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which she headed from 1999 to 2003, and as a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague from 2003 to 2008. She then served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Much of her work has focused on developing international criminal law and prosecuting genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

In recent years, Pillay has taken a strong stance against Israel's actions. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Palestinian territories and Israel, which she led, concluded that Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups committed war crimes, including mass killings and hostage-taking. Simultaneously, the commission accused Israel of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, citing civilian deaths, forced displacement, and infrastructure destruction.

In September 2025, Pillay's commission stated that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza, alleging that its actions and leadership statements indicated an intent to destroy Palestinians as a group. Israel vehemently rejected these findings, accusing the commission of bias and ignoring the context of its war against Hamas. The commission also reported that Israeli policies in the West Bank and Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem contribute to settlement expansion and the displacement of Palestinians.

The Nobel Peace Prize comes with a 12 million Swedish krona award, and the ceremony will be held in Stockholm on December 10. The article also lists the recipients of other 2026 Nobel Prizes: Physiology or Medicine (Carl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, Georg Nagel), Physics (Francis Halzen), Chemistry (Henri Kagan, Kenso Soai), and Literature (Ann Carson). The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences will be announced on October 12.
