An unusual incident occurred Thursday evening during a session of the Ariel City Council, when a confrontation between Council Member Oren Hazan and city officials escalated. According to the municipality, Hazan violently assaulted a municipal employee, who required medical attention. Police were summoned to the scene.

The Ariel Municipality claims the incident arose from disruptions Hazan allegedly caused during the meeting in an attempt to prevent it from proceeding. Mayor Yair Shtabbon strongly condemned the event, stating his intention to take action with the Ministry of Interior. "A red line was crossed today. We cannot allow this bullying to continue," Shtabbon said. "I am ashamed that this is what a council meeting looks like, that this is how public representatives behave. Oren Hazan insults us time and again."

Shtabbon added that he plans to request the Ministry of Interior suspend council meetings until an investigation into Hazan is completed. "Council meetings are not a reality show. We will not give up and will demand the Ministry of Interior not hold council meetings until an inquiry is conducted with him," he stated.

This is not the first confrontation between the two, stemming from a political rivalry. In the 2024 Ariel mayoral election, Shtabbon and Hazan faced each other in a runoff, with Shtabbon winning 62.9% of the vote compared to Hazan's 37.1%. Hazan has continued to serve as a council member since the election, and the two have clashed in council meetings before. In March 2025, a video surfaced showing Hazan making offensive remarks towards Shtabbon, following which the mayor reported that a complaint had been filed with the police.
