Former Swiss national team and Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has announced his intention to challenge Gianni Infantino for the FIFA presidency in the 2027 elections. Vega, 55, who also played alongside Ronny Rosenthal at Tottenham and Eyal Berkovic at Celtic, is the first to publicly declare his candidacy against the incumbent.

Vega, who has worked in finance since retiring from football, outlined his platform in an 11-page document, stating, "I am running because my life has prepared me to serve the game." He expressed a belief in a "social duty" to protect football's integrity and future, arguing that trust within the global football family has been deeply damaged. "Weak management has damaged FIFA's credibility and eroded trust in the global football family," Vega stated, criticizing ego battles within football's leadership that he believes harm players, coaches, referees, and fans.

Describing football as being "in the emergency room, on life support," Vega called for a "decisive change, not cosmetic fixes" to restore trust, stability, and modernize FIFA's management. However, his candidacy is not guaranteed. To officially become a candidate, Vega must secure the support of at least five of FIFA's 211 member associations. He previously attempted to run for the position in 2022 but failed to gather sufficient support.

Gianni Infantino has led FIFA since 2016 and was re-elected unopposed in 2019 and 2023. He has already declared his intention to seek re-election in 2027, amid ongoing disputes with UEFA and criticism over a shelved plan to introduce private investors into the organization's commercial activities. If Vega succeeds in reaching the ballot and winning, he would be the third consecutive Swiss president of FIFA, following Sepp Blatter and Infantino.
