New York City Mayor Zuhairah Mamdani has drawn criticism for a social media post commemorating the three-year anniversary of the October 7th Hamas attacks. While acknowledging Israeli victims, Mamdani primarily condemned Israeli actions in Gaza, calling them a "devastating and ongoing genocide" and accusing Israel of war crimes. He claimed over 74,000 Palestinians, including 21,000 children, have been killed, and alleged that New York taxpayer money funds these actions. Mamdani's views are reportedly influenced by his father, a vocal critic of Israel.

New York City Mayor Zuhairah Mamdani has once again ignited controversy with his statements regarding Israel. In a post on X marking three years since the October 7th events, Mamdani addressed the Hamas massacre but primarily used the platform to harshly criticize Israeli policy in Gaza.

Mamdani began by acknowledging the Israeli victims, stating, "This day is especially painful for so many New Yorkers, it marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7, when Hamas killed over 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 more people. We mourn with our friends and neighbors who still carry this unfathomable loss."

However, the mayor quickly shifted from commemorating October 7th to leveling severe accusations against Israel. He claimed, "The suffering did not begin and did not end on that day." Mamdani asserted that "the suffering continues with the devastating and ongoing genocide carried out by the Israeli government in Gaza, a genocide in which over 74,000 Palestinians have been killed, including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed."

Mamdani further accused Israel of attacking ambulances, residential buildings, and journalists, and incensed many residents by claiming that New York taxpayers' money is being used to fund what he defined as "war crimes." He concluded his post with a strong call to action: "Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world where the occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity. To honor the dead, we must fight for a world where every person can live in freedom, security, and dignity."

Since taking office this year, Mamdani has been involved in several anti-Israel incidents. His worldview is significantly influenced by his father, Mahmood Mamdani, an anthropologist and academic considered a sharp critic of Israel in academia. His father has described Zionism as a colonialist project based on apartheid and has previously called for the "de-Zionization" of the country. His father also signed a letter from Columbia University lecturers that presented Hamas's October 7th attack as a legitimate "military action" as part of resistance to the occupation. Mamdani's wife has also expressed significant sympathy for the events Israel experienced on October 7th.
