A new book, "A Stunning Diamond," published two weeks ago, features twenty interviews conducted by former Knesset Member and Minister Yizhar Shi. The book aims to understand the battle in which Shi's son, Sergeant Yaron Shi, was killed on October 7, and to honor the bravery of his comrades. Yaron Shi and Major Ido Shani, Deputy Commander of the Nahal Brigade's reconnaissance unit, were photographed watching a sunset on the border near Kerem Shalom just hours before they were killed in combat on October 7. Their deaths occurred during the initial Hamas attack.

According to Omer Alfuar, a fighter in the Nahal Brigade who was stationed at the time in the Kerem Shalom-Nir Yitzhak sector, the sunset was beautiful, prompting him to take a photo. He recalls a casual evening with fellow soldiers, sharing food and conversation, before the attack began. "We were sitting like this on the border every morning and evening," Alfuar recounted. "Even that evening, I remember we were sitting normally, someone started taking out sausages from nowhere, we had a meal, we laughed, we talked, and I wanted to photograph the special sunset."

Yizhar Shi explained that the book began as a personal journey to understand his son's final battle and the friends who were central to his life. He described the difficult process of gathering information from Yaron's comrades, including Yoav Levinson, Omer Betito, and Alfuar, who recounted their experiences under fire. "Slowly, a full picture of what they did began to emerge," Shi said. "And at the same time, I began to understand that there is a much bigger story here."

Alfuar, who was involved in evacuating wounded soldiers under fire, described the intense combat and the critical decisions made by individuals. He noted that their actions, along with the battle fought by Yaron Shi's command group, delayed the terrorists. "I understand today that it was luck because our fighting, in addition to the battle fought by Yaron's command group, delayed the terrorists," he stated. Yizhar Shi emphasized that despite the "shocking failure" of the surprise attack, the soldiers in the Kerem Shalom area performed exceptionally, saving thousands of civilians at an "unbelievable price." He stated, "These are the people who saved the State of Israel."
