Colonel Assaf Hamami, commander of the Southern Brigade in the Gaza Division, was killed on October 7 and his body was taken to Gaza. More than two years later, his body has been returned to Israel. In the initial moments of the October 7 Hamas attack, amidst confusion from rocket fire, reports of infiltrations, and calls for help, Hamami quickly grasped the severity of the situation. He understood it was not a localized infiltration but a full-scale war. Hamami, 40, a married father of three, immediately went to the field with his troops to fight the terrorists. During the battle, he fell and his body was abducted to the Gaza Strip. His family endured over two years of loss and the knowledge of his body being held in Gaza. In November 2025, his remains were returned to Israel for burial. Hamami was known as a commander who led by personal example, not staying behind even as his surroundings collapsed on October 7. He recognized the war and went directly into the fight.
