Gadi Eisenkot, a member of Israel's War Cabinet, visited the fortified position in Re'im where soldier Aner Shapira fell on October 7, exactly three years after the Hamas attack. Eisenkot stood with Aner's parents, Shira and Moshe Shapira, who recounted their son's final moments.

Eisenkot recalled a ceremony where the Shapiras were honored, stating that he had been asked to define leadership in one sentence. He responded, "Leadership in one sentence, taking responsibility and setting a personal example." He explained that Aner Shapira embodied these traits, having taken command of the fortified position without being appointed and personally defending the 26 people behind him.

According to Eisenkot, Shapira threw back ten to eleven grenades before the last one, exposing himself to protect others. "In my eyes, this is a model of behavior, of supreme heroism," Eisenkot said, describing Shapira's actions with only sandals and a broken bottle to defend those he barely knew, even leaving instructions for them to continue if he fell.

Eisenkot emphasized that Shapira's story is a model of a person and a fighter who, aware of his impending death, fought heroically until the very last second. He concluded by reflecting on the values of responsibility and personal example that should be instilled in future generations, without directly commenting on their current state in Israel.
