Man Arrested After Punching Officer, Barricades Himself in Yeshiva with Students

Police in the Gush Etzion station were called to the Rabbi Chaim Min HaHar yeshiva in Beitar Illit on Simchat Torah following a report of a drunken man disturbing public order and assaulting passersby. Upon arrival, officers began investigating the report. At that point, another individual, also intoxicated, arrived and assaulted the officers. Police stated that this suspect was arrested, but the haredi community claimed the man who punched an officer was an army deserter. Following the arrest, the man and dozens of students barricaded themselves inside the yeshiva. Police stated this was accompanied by "disseminating false information that this was an arrest operation for a draft dodger." Additional police forces were dispatched to the scene to restore order. The rabbis reportedly instructed students "not to give in" and to protest. During the confrontations, a police vehicle's tire was punctured and a trash can was set on fire.
