Iran and Oman issued a joint statement saying they are committed to ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz in line with relevant international law, while emphasizing their sovereignty and rights over the strait’s territorial waters.
The statement said the two sides also agreed to keep talking through a joint working group made up of the foreign ministries of both countries. That group is meant to work toward an agreement on the future management of shipping in the strait, the services to be provided in that context, and the associated costs.
According to the statement, any future arrangement would be consistent with international standards. No timetable for the negotiations was given.
