Dutch Authorities Bar Hapoel Beer Sheva Fans From Alkmaar Match
Hapoel Beer Sheva fans will not be permitted to attend the team's Europa League away match against AZ Alkmaar on October 15, the Dutch club announced Wednesday. The municipality, police, and public prosecutor's office jointly decided against allowing away supporters into the stadium for the game.
Alkmaar stated that the match has generated "various reactions and opinions in society" and that the club respects differing viewpoints. However, it emphasized its responsibility to organize a safe and responsible game under UEFA and relevant authorities' regulations.
This decision follows a pattern of incidents involving Israeli teams and fans in the Netherlands. Last year, the Amsterdam municipality declared Maccabi Tel Aviv unwelcome in the city after violent riots erupted following a match against Ajax. Additionally, Israeli travelers have reported stringent and offensive customs checks at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, stemming from a new Dutch decree effective September 22 that criminalizes the import and sale of goods from the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights, with potential penalties including fines and up to six years imprisonment.
