Parents of Fallen IDF Hero Visit Knesset Member's Sukkah

Ilan and Clara Chamami, parents of IDF hero Assaf Chamami, who was killed on October 7th, visited the sukkah of newly elected United Torah Judaism party leader MK Yaakov Asher on Tuesday, the intermediate days of Sukkot. They were accompanied by senior commentator Israel Cohen, a prominent activist for hostages and former captives since the October 7th Hamas attack. During the visit, the Chamamis emphasized the importance of unity within Israeli society and the need to avoid division between different sectors. They presented MK Asher with a medal of honor dedicated to their son, outlining his principles for the people of Israel.

Ilan Chamami shared an anecdote about a call from Israel's Ambassador to the U.S., Michael Lawler, who asked him to pray for the recovery of his son Neria, who was seriously injured in a recent attack. Chamami recounted that Lawler, who is also a bereaved parent, had previously traveled with him to visit death camps in Poland, crying the entire way. "I never cry," Chamami stated, "only when I am in front of a Torah scroll."

Chamami also described an experience at Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai's tomb in Meron, where people recognized him and asked for his blessing. They told him his son was in paradise next to Rabbi Akiva and the Ten Martyrs of the Talmud, implying his blessings would be especially potent.
