Security Briefing Erupts Into Political Clash Between Netanyahu and Lapid

A security briefing between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Opposition Leader Yair Lapid devolved into a sharp political confrontation and mutual accusations.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, the meeting, attended by the military secretary and intelligence officer, included detailed intelligence warnings about potential attacks on various fronts ahead of the upcoming election period. However, immediately after the briefing, Lapid launched an attack, stating that security threats should be handled professionally and responsibly, and that Israel's security and IDF bases are not props for election videos. He asserted that the security systems are prepared and there is no reason to cause public panic.

Lapid also used the security forum to criticize the draft law, citing the IDF chief of staff's warnings about a shortage of combat soldiers and IDF attrition. Lapid suggested that if Netanyahu is concerned about security, he should enlist the 15,000 Haredi men currently exempt from military service.

In response, the Likud party sarcastically commented on the speed with which Lapid issued his statement, accusing him of cynical political exploitation of the security meeting. They noted that Lapid released a lengthy, politically charged statement just two minutes after the meeting concluded, suggesting either he writes at "light speed" or the statement was pre-prepared regardless of the briefing's content.
