Netanyahu and Lapid Clash Over Election Security Briefing

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Opposition Leader Yair Lapid engaged in a political dispute following a security briefing on Wednesday night. The briefing was prompted by Netanyahu's statement that "there are signs that our enemies will try to attack ahead of the elections." However, the meeting quickly devolved into a public argument, with Netanyahu accusing Lapid of preparing his response in advance.

Shortly after the briefing concluded, Lapid issued a statement asserting that security threats should be handled professionally and responsibly, and that "Israel's security and IDF bases are not a backdrop for election videos." He added that the IDF, Shin Bet, and police are prepared for the elections and there is no reason to cause public panic. Lapid also highlighted "10 red flags" raised by the IDF Chief of Staff regarding a shortage of combat soldiers and IDF attrition, suggesting that if Netanyahu is concerned about security, he should enlist the 15,000 missing yeshiva students required for the IDF.

In response to Lapid's statement, the Likud party accused Lapid of releasing a "comprehensive political attack" on the Prime Minister just two minutes after their meeting, suggesting the statement was pre-written. Lapid, in turn, requested a four-way meeting involving Netanyahu, the head of the Shin Bet, and the Chairman of the Central Elections Committee, arguing that if the Prime Minister publicly states there is a threat that could disrupt the elections, all involved parties should receive a full update on the situation and the steps being taken to ensure the democratic process.

Despite Lapid's request, only the two-person meeting took place. The exchange underscores the heightened political tensions surrounding security concerns as elections approach.
