US Sports Analyst Urges Deni Avdija to Elevate Defensive Game

A US-based sports analyst, Reese Kunz of Rip City Project, has identified improved defense as the next crucial step for Israeli NBA player Deni Avdija. Kunz noted that Avdija was forced into a significant playmaking role last season due to injuries on the Portland Trail Blazers' backcourt, helping the team secure 42 wins and reach the playoffs. However, Kunz argued that this offensive burden came at the expense of Avdija's defense, which noticeably declined as he conserved energy for offensive initiatives.

With the addition of new ball-handlers and decision-makers this season, new head coach Chauncey Billups plans to continue utilizing Avdija as a point-forward but expects a much greater contribution on the defensive end. Billups stated during media day, "We're going to get Deni to start guarding here in the West like he did in the East when he was in Washington. He's a very talented defender when he wants to be, no doubt."

Kunz suggested that while Avdija's individual offensive statistics might decrease slightly with more playmakers on the floor, his efficiency is expected to improve with better and less forced shot opportunities. The most significant development, according to Kunz, is anticipated on defense. "He has the physical tools to be a strong, versatile perimeter defender, and as Billups noted, he's already proven he can do it in Washington," Kunz wrote.

Kunz emphasized Portland's need for Avdija's defensive capabilities given the team's roster construction. He believes that while players like Toumani Camara and Jrue Holiday can compensate for backcourt limitations, Avdija's size and versatility are essential for the team's unique formula to succeed. Kunz concluded by expressing hope that the 2026-27 season will showcase Avdija's most complete version yet.
