Israelis Face Discrimination at World Triathlon Championship in Spain

The Israeli triathlon delegation faced significant discrimination at the World Championship held in Pontevedra, Spain, nearly leading to their withdrawal from the competition. Lior Cohen, the professional manager of the Israel Triathlon Association, described the hostile atmosphere during an interview, stating that "wherever possible, the Israeli flag was removed, as was the word Israel." In a relay event, the team was referred to as "Team 20" without any national identification.

Further incidents included tape being placed over the word "Israel" on equipment and one athlete, Shahar Sagiv, being forced to compete in an unfamiliar, neutral wetsuit due to the circumstances, which Cohen described as a professional and moral blow. The hostility was reportedly fueled by the local organizing committee and the mayor, who allegedly created an anti-Israel atmosphere and spoke out against "the massacre in Gaza" at the opening ceremony, which the Israeli team was barred from attending.

Despite the challenges, the Israeli athletes achieved notable results, with Sagiv finishing 31st and the U23 team placing 13th. The International Federation provided crucial support, preventing the team from pulling out. Cohen noted that similar incidents had occurred previously in Ireland, but expressed hope that future competitions in South America or Asia would be less politically charged.
