Spanish City Hosts World Triathlon Finals, Bars Israeli Symbols

Pontevedra, Spain, hosted the 2026 World Triathlon Finals from September 23-26. The Palestinian Triathlon Federation was represented by athlete George Hatoum in the age group competitions. In an unprecedented move, local authorities decided to hold all events without displaying the Israeli flag or any symbols of occupation, as a protest against alleged war crimes and genocide in Gaza.

During the official opening ceremony, Pontevedra's mayor, Miguel Anxo Fernández Lores, extended a special greeting and thanks to the Palestinian delegation, expressing solidarity and hope for an end to the humanitarian tragedy. He wished for the Palestinian people to live in peace and security.

Mohamed Abu Tair, president of the Palestinian Triathlon Federation, thanked Spain for its principled stance and support of the Palestinian cause. He praised George Hatoum for his determination in representing Palestine at the global event. Nazmi Al-Arkan, Commissioner for Diaspora and Media, described the participation as a significant sporting and diplomatic achievement, reflecting Palestinian resilience and ability to gain international presence despite logistical challenges and limited resources.

On the sidelines of the finals, the Palestinian Federation also participated administratively in the International Triathlon Union's General Assembly via video conference. The assembly was held concurrently with the championship events in Spain. The Palestinian delegation included Federation President Mohamed Abu Tair and board member Nazmi Al-Arkan.
