Israeli Triathlete Barred From Wearing National Colors at World Championship

Olympic triathlete Shachar Sagiv was not permitted to compete in his official Israeli uniform, featuring the country's name and flag, at the World Championship held in Spain. Sagiv, 31, stated that he was informed of the decision two days prior and attempted to contest it, but was ultimately given a neutral suit with only his name hours before the race.

The competition took place under heavy security due to anti-Israel sentiment and pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the area. Sagiv explained that the mayor of Pontevedra, the host city, is openly critical of Israel and referred to the championship as a "competition against the Zionist government" in his opening remarks.

According to Sagiv, the decision was made by the International Triathlon Union in conjunction with the Israeli Triathlon Association as a protective measure. He noted that the Israeli youth and U23 relay teams also competed in neutral attire. Sagiv expressed deep disappointment and shame at having to compete without the Israeli flag, calling the situation "very, very, very difficult."

This is not the first time Sagiv has faced exclusion due to his nationality. He recalled an incident two weeks prior where the Israeli senior team was threatened with cancellation of the European Cup in Ireland unless they withdrew, leading the entire team to forfeit.

Despite the controversy, Sagiv finished 31st in the Grand Final, which included a 1500m swim, 40km bike ride, and 10km run, earning crucial Olympic qualification points for his third potential appearance at the Los Angeles Olympics. He is currently recovering from a three-month injury and aims to gain significant points in his remaining three races this season.
