Kosher-Observant Jewish Goalkeeper David Shrem Called Up to Mexico U23 Squad

David Shrem, a 21-year-old Jewish goalkeeper who observes kashrut, has received a surprise call-up to the Mexican U23 national football team. Shrem, who stands at 6'4", currently plays for the reserve team of Toluca and is considered one of Mexico's promising young goalkeepers, particularly excelling in one-on-one situations. Despite his youth and limited senior experience, his inclusion in the squad for upcoming friendly matches marks a significant step in his career.

Shrem's journey to this point has been unconventional. As a teenager, his acrobatic saves gained online attention, leading to a stint in the academy of Spanish club Atlético Madrid. Although bureaucratic issues prevented him from playing for 18 months, he credits the Spanish academy with improving his positioning and tactical understanding, contrasting it with the more aggressive style of Mexican football. He noted, "In Spain, I learned to position myself better."

After resolving passport matters, Shrem played in a youth tournament and attracted interest from Pachuca, a major Mexican club. He returned to Mexico, where the club accommodated his need for kosher food while he attended a Jewish school. "Shrem is proud of his Jewish identity," Mexican media reported, "his teammates respect it."

Following his return to Pachuca in the 2023-24 season, Shrem was seen as a promising player, training with players 4-5 years older. He transferred to Toluca this season with an eye on the 2028 Olympic Games. Shrem describes his goalkeeping style as unique in Mexico, especially in one-on-one and aerial duels, and he studies keepers like Keylor Navas, though he aims to improve his footwork. While he has yet to debut in a senior match, his high potential has led to his current national team call-up, with some suggesting he could become a relevant name for top-tier clubs in the coming years.
