Jewish Goalkeeper David Shrem Called Up to Mexico's U23 Squad

David Shrem, a 21-year-old Jewish goalkeeper, has been called up to the Mexican national under-23 football team for upcoming friendly matches. Shrem, who celebrates his 21st birthday in August, currently plays for the reserve team of Toluca and is noted for his skills in one-on-one situations, though he lacks extensive senior-level experience.

Shrem's journey to this call-up has been unconventional. He gained early recognition as a viral sensation for his acrobatic saves, attracting the attention of Atlético Madrid. He joined their academy, known for developing goalkeepers like Thibaut Courtois and Jan Oblak, but was sidelined for 18 months due to bureaucratic issues. Despite this, Shrem views the time positively, highlighting the superior technical level of Spanish academies compared to Mexican football's focus on aggression. He learned better positioning and tactical awareness during his time in Spain.

After resolving passport issues, Shrem played in a youth tournament in Oviedo. Pachuca, a prominent Mexican club, expressed interest. Shrem desired to return to Mexico, and Pachuca accommodated his religious needs by providing kosher food, while he attended a Jewish school alongside his training. His Jewish identity is a source of pride and is respected by his teammates.

Since returning to Pachuca in the 2023-24 season, Shrem was considered a promising player, training with players 4-5 years his senior. He transferred to Toluca this season with aspirations for the 2028 Olympic Games. Shrem describes his goalkeeping style as unique in Mexico, particularly in one-on-one and aerial duels, and studies keepers like Keylor Navas, while acknowledging the need to improve his footwork.

Despite having no senior professional appearances, Mexican football holds high hopes for Shrem. His inclusion in the U23 squad, alongside players with senior caps and promising young talents, underscores his potential. While it's too early to definitively label him as Mexico's future starting goalkeeper, his high potential suggests he could become a significant player in top-tier leagues in the coming years.
