Israeli Goalkeeper to Play Alongside Egyptian Player with Anti-Israel Stance
Israeli goalkeeper Niv Eliasi will play for Greek club Levadiakos alongside Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Elneny, a former Arsenal player known for his past anti-Israel statements. Elneny, 33, has signed a one-year contract with Levadiakos after his previous stint with Al-Jazira. This move will see him and Eliasi, who joined the Greek team on loan from Hapoel Be'er Sheva this summer, share a locker room.
Elneny's history of expressing anti-Israel sentiments dates back to at least 2013 when he and Mohamed Salah initially refused to travel to Israel for a Champions League qualifier with Basel, though they eventually complied, stating it was their job. On a subsequent trip to Israel with Basel, Elneny referred to the country as "occupied Palestine" and expressed joy in meeting Palestinians who encouraged him.
More recently, following the October 7th attacks, Elneny posted on social media calling for the "liberation of Palestine" and action for the residents of Gaza. Eliasi, the Israeli goalkeeper, will now be teammates with Elneny at Levadiakos.
