New Baby Born to Slain Hostage's Family in Israel

A baby boy has been born to the parents of Almog Sarusi, who was abducted and murdered by Hamas terrorists while held captive. His parents, Nira and Yigal, used frozen eggs from approximately 25 years prior and a surrogate mother to fulfill their dream of having another child. The decision to pursue this path came after the tragic death of their son and in the face of daily grief and profound loss.

The family received full consent for the surrogacy, and a woman agreed to carry the pregnancy as a mitzvah, or good deed. After initial attempts failed, a viable embryo was created on the final try, bringing hope back to the family. The pregnancy was kept secret for months until the baby boy, named Lavi, was circumcised in a ceremony held yesterday afternoon.

Almog's sister, Amit, shared her emotions on Instagram, expressing the enduring pain and longing for her brother while celebrating the new arrival. She wrote, "Almog, you must already know that you moved things for us to make this happen, a brother was born to you who will grow up knowing that his older brother is a hero like no other. We will not let evil defeat us. We will continue in your path, we will make you proud."

The Mayor of Ra'anana, Chaim Broide, attended the circumcision and described the event as a long and complex journey, a reality stranger than fiction. He noted the ceremony was filled with longing, tears, and pain, but also with the joy of a baby bringing smiles to a family for whom the meaning of life is so profound. The family stated in their invitation to the circumcision, "A miracle happened to us. Thanks to a wonderful surrogate mother, we were given a son on Yom Kippur. We will forever carry the pain for Almog, but we are full of hope that alongside the pain, we will succeed in rejoicing in the gifts God has given us."
