Rami Levy Leads Cheapest Grocery Chains in Israel, Study Finds
A comprehensive study of 172 diverse products across ten Israeli supermarket chains reveals significant price disparities, particularly after holiday sales conclude. The research, conducted by Dr. Chazi Gur for Maariv, categorizes the chains into three distinct price tiers, indicating that choosing the wrong retailer can cost families hundreds of shekels more.
The "low-cost league" features intense competition, with Rami Levy identified as having the cheapest basket of goods at 2,053.82 shekels. Osher Ad follows closely at 2,079.01 shekels, with Carrefour Hyper at 2,121.57 shekels and Yohananof at 2,134.20 shekels, showing a gap of only about 80 shekels among these top four.
A substantial price jump occurs when moving to the mid-tier league, with a difference exceeding 200 shekels. This group is led by Victory at 2,335.11 shekels, followed by Kashet Ta'amim (2,368.46 shekels), Universe (2,371.83 shekels), and Shufersal Deal (2,408.16 shekels).
The most expensive chains are at the bottom of the ranking, significantly diverging from their competitors. Fresh Market offers its basket for 2,532.04 shekels, while Tiv Ta'am is the priciest at 2,716.24 shekels. This represents a considerable difference of over 662 shekels between the cheapest and most expensive options.
