Police Commander Under Investigation for Bribery Resigns, Set to Lead Tiberias Municipality
Superintendent Avishai Moalem, former commander of the Judea and Samaria District Special Patrol Unit (YAMAS), has resigned from the Israel Police following an investigation into allegations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. Moalem is reportedly being considered for the position of Tiberias Municipality Director-General, a nomination supported by the city's mayor. The municipality stated that Moalem is one of the candidates and an appointment committee will convene after the holiday.
Moalem was arrested in December 2024 and investigated by the Police Internal Investigations Department (Mahash) on suspicion of delaying investigative actions against Jewish terror suspects to advance his career within the police force. He was also investigated for allegedly leaking classified information to associates of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir in exchange for promotion. Moalem has claimed the investigation stems from a conflict with the Shin Bet's Jewish division.
During the same investigation, Prisons Commissioner Katy Yaacobi was also questioned on suspicion of updating Moalem about the covert investigation against him, which may have hindered his promotion. The State Attorney's Office has decided to file an indictment against Yaacobi, pending a hearing.
Moalem's resignation and potential appointment come amid these serious allegations, which he attributes to internal conflicts.
