Police Commander Under Investigation Eyed for Top Tiberias City Hall Role

Despite an ongoing investigation into his alleged ties with associates of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, Superintendent Avishai Moalem is reportedly set to transition from the police force to a senior position as Director-General of Tiberias Municipality. The decision awaits the State Prosecutor's Office's final review of the case materials, which were transferred for their consideration. The Prosecutor's Office has yet to decide whether to indict Moalem, pending a hearing, or close the case.

Moalem, a Tiberias native, was the subject of an investigation by the Police Internal Investigations Department in late 2024. The probe examined claims of his connections with Ben-Gvir and his circle, including suspicions of transferring classified information and refraining from specific enforcement actions against far-right activists. Moalem has denied all allegations, asserting that the case is politically motivated, fabricated against him, and that he did not leak information or accept favors.

Tiberias Municipality stated that they are indeed seeking a Director-General and that an appointment committee will convene soon. They added that an official announcement will be made after the committee's decision and declined to comment on specific names or speculation.
