AI-Generated Network Promoted Ben Gvir's Party, Report Claims

A network of over 100 social media accounts, utilizing AI-generated images and repetitive messaging, was reportedly used to promote the Otzma Yehudit party and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir ahead of elections, according to a "Fake Reporter" investigation. The accounts allegedly posed as Israeli users, advancing the party's agenda while also attacking political rivals within the same bloc.

The investigation found that these accounts frequently employed AI-generated images and engaged with posts from politicians and media outlets. "Fake Reporter" claims a pattern emerged where key messages were repeatedly disseminated in various formulations, potentially creating an illusion of broader support than actually exists. The accounts are reportedly linked to several central accounts associated with the Otzma Yehudit campaign.

Examples cited include accounts responding to critical coverage of Ben Gvir on Channel 14 with messages like "Netanyahu's mercenaries." In another instance, responding to a campaign by Bezalel Smotrich concerning the Negev and Galilee, messages such as "voters don't buy this bluff" and "only remembers at the ballot box" appeared. The accounts also reportedly attacked Ofer Winter, chairman of the Am Israel party, and promoted cooperation between Ben Gvir and MK Tali Gottlieb.

"Fake Reporter" noted that some accounts featured AI-generated profile pictures and had very few followers. Nir Rosen, CEO of "Fake Reporter," stated that the use of bots and fake profiles to influence public opinion is increasing before elections, raising questions about election propaganda laws and suggesting the Central Elections Committee should investigate.

Minister Itamar Ben Gvir's office rejected the allegations, calling the report "the same 'investigation,' the same 'left-wing elements,' and the same 'Fake Reporter' of extreme left-wing people." They also referenced similar claims made before previous elections about Netanyahu operating a "fake army." The office concluded, "They will continue to bark, we will continue to win."
