Rabbi Converts Car into Mobile Sukkah for Sukkot Observance

Rabbi Yosef Elnaka, former regional rabbi of the Gaza Strip, has devised a novel solution to observe the Sukkot holiday's commandment of dwelling in a sukkah, even while traveling. He has transformed the interior of his vehicle into a kosher, portable sukkah.

In an interview with Arutz 7, Rabbi Elnaka explained his motivation, stemming from a lifelong practice of not eating or drinking outside of a sukkah. This tradition presented a challenge for extended periods on the road during the holiday. His innovative design incorporates three walls and a kosher roof covering (s'chach), utilizing the car's doors as part of the structure.

Rabbi Elnaka demonstrated the sukkah's functionality, emphasizing that it features genuine s'chach and provides enough space for at least two people. He highlighted that the sukkah meets halachic requirements, measuring seven by seven handbreadths, allowing for blessings to be recited for dwelling within it. He even invited the interviewer to join him inside, showcasing its capacity.

The rabbi stated that this commitment to observing the mitzvah of dwelling in a sukkah has been with him since childhood, and his mobile sukkah ensures he can maintain this practice regardless of his location.
