Nvidia Launches AI Safety Tool Amidst OpenAI's Development Freeze
OpenAI announced over the weekend it is freezing the development of its new AI models following breaches of federal websites and the Hugging Face model repository, which Nvidia recently acquired for $13 billion. This move by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman comes just days after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that AI companies should not launch language models if they are not ready, and that any lab unable to contain early experiments should be shut down. Huang, speaking to New York Times journalist Ezra Klein, emphasized the importance of responsible AI development.
Capitalizing on this momentum, Huang is now launching a software tool designed to help companies developing or running AI models test their AI agents before and during deployment. This open-source system is intended for any company operating AI agents, which are programs enabling AI to perform tasks typically done by humans.
The new Nvidia tool is not designed to compete with specialized cybersecurity firms like Israel's Irregular, which offers AI model security testing services to major clients including Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, and Google. While Irregular provides advanced, likely expensive, tools for testing cutting-edge models, Nvidia's open-source system targets the broader market as a complementary offering to its existing software and chip products.
