Israeli-Irish Footballer Finn Azaz Benched Amid Controversy

Finn Azaz, a midfielder for the Irish national football team with Israeli roots, has been left out of the starting lineup for their match against Israel. This decision comes amidst significant controversy surrounding Azaz's future with the national team, particularly following reports that he presented the Israeli perspective on the complex situation in the region to his teammates.

Azaz, who has made 15 appearances for Ireland, including starting in their last ten consecutive games, was not included in the starting eleven for the match. This development follows an announcement from the Irish team that they would not be shaking hands with the Israeli players. The midfielder's mother, Orit, is from an Israeli family, and his maternal grandfather was the Israeli sculptor Nehemia Azaz, who served in the Jewish Brigade during World War II and later in the Armored Corps during Israel's War of Independence.

Born in London, Azaz developed through the youth systems of West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa before moving to Middlesbrough in January 2024. At Middlesbrough, he became a key player, scoring 17 goals and providing 17 assists in 67 league appearances. He also solidified his position in the Irish national team. In August 2025, he transferred to Southampton on a four-year contract, in a deal reportedly valued at approximately £15 million.
