Azaz, whose mother is Israeli, shared personal connections, including that his maternal grandmother served as a commander in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He presented the Israeli perspective on the conflict during two separate team meetings, a challenging task given the presumed widespread opposition to Israel's actions in Gaza and Lebanon. Azaz's maternal grandfather was the Israeli sculptor Nehemia Azaz, who served in the Jewish Brigade during World War II and later in the Armored Corps during Israel's War of Independence. Azaz himself was born in London and has played for several English clubs, including Middlesbrough and currently Southampton, where he moved in August 2025 for a reported £15 million.
