Palestinian Election Commission Begins Accepting Candidate Lists for November Vote

The Central Elections Commission of the Palestinian Authority has commenced the process of accepting candidate lists for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for November 28. This marks the first such procedure in over twenty years. The submission period for candidate lists will conclude at 4:00 PM on October 7.

Participation in the elections is restricted to candidates within electoral lists, each requiring between 16 and 132 candidates, with a mandatory representation of women. Applications are being received at the commission's main office in Al-Bireh and its regional office in Deir el-Balah, Gaza Strip. The commission is currently reviewing each submission for compliance with established requirements.

The Palestinian Legislative Council has not convened since 2007, following Hamas's victory in the parliamentary elections the previous year. It remains uncertain whether Hamas and its affiliated candidates will be permitted to participate in the upcoming vote. In June, Mahmoud Abbas enacted a new law mandating that candidates adopt the Palestine Liberation Organization's political platform, which includes recognizing Israel and supporting a two-state solution. These conditions are reportedly unacceptable to Hamas.
