Haifa International Film Festival Opens, Honors Avi Nesher
The 42nd Haifa International Film Festival commenced on Saturday evening, September 26th, at the Haifa "Auditorium." The festival, running through October 3rd during the Sukkot holiday, celebrated director Avi Nesher with a lifetime achievement award for his cinematic mastery and contributions to Israeli culture. Actor Lior Ashkenazi hosted the opening ceremony, which also featured performances and appearances by Yuval Raphael, exiled Iranian singer and actress Golazin Ardestani, Shashi Keshet, Mai Feingold, Rinat Goldman, and the Haifa Symphony Orchestra conducted by Eran Reemi.
The opening film was Nesher's latest work, "Our Loves," which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie depicts seven individuals navigating personal crises on October 6, 2023, only to have their lives dramatically altered by the events of October 7th. "Our Loves" has received 12 Ophir Award nominations, including for Best Film.
Festival screenings are scheduled from morning until midnight across five venues. The Haifa Municipality typically estimates around 80,000 attendees for the festival's cinema showings, with thousands more participating in outdoor events.
