Ex-Hostage Rom Braslavski Apologizes for Mocking IDF Soldiers

Rom Braslavski, a former hostage who gained public attention, has issued a dramatic apology after facing backlash for mocking fellow Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reservists. The controversy began when Braslavski shared a photo of social and political activist and reservist Jonathan Shalev being carried by comrades, sarcastically commenting, "Hamas is really shaking from them...".

The post quickly drew angry responses, prompting Braslavski to retract his statement and apologize directly to Shalev. He emphasized his deep respect for Shalev as a soldier, regardless of his political path, stating, "You are a soldier first, and a politician second." Braslavski revealed that his mockery stemmed from personal feelings of inadequacy and envy.

He explained that during his own military service, he and his peers were denied entry into elite units and were instead assigned roles like truck drivers or cooks, despite his intense desire to be a combat soldier. Braslavski recounted his struggle to overcome a draft exemption, driven by his ambition to serve in combat roles. He felt rejected by the army, which he perceived as not accepting individuals like him.

"I probably envied you, brother, that's all," Braslavski concluded, seeking forgiveness and vowing not to let "cheap politics" overshadow his life and tarnish people.
