Former Southampton Goalie Bazunu Leads Ireland Player Boycott of Israel Match

Despite threats of a boycott, the Irish national football team announced on Saturday that it will proceed with its match against Israel. However, the controversy surrounding the game continues, with at least seven players declaring they will not participate. Leading this protest is goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who was formerly teammates with Israel's Daniel Peretz at Southampton.

Bazunu was Southampton's starting goalkeeper until Peretz joined the team last season. The transition was so significant that one reporter described it as "likely the biggest upgrade in football history." Bazunu remained with Southampton until the end of last season before being released and joining Bolton, while Peretz stayed with the club.

Now, Bazunu finds himself in a rivalry with Peretz again, though they will not face each other on the field as Bazunu has committed to boycotting the match against Israel. His season has started poorly, conceding six goals in three games, including a hat-trick in a loss to West Ham, whose player Manor Solomon is also an Israeli national team member facing international criticism.

In contrast, Finn Azaz, another Irish player who was with Peretz at Southampton and whose mother was raised in Israel, is expected to play in the match, unlike Bazunu and the other boycotting players. Bazunu's decision to lead the boycott stems from widespread political pressure in Ireland, where opposition parties are calling for broader boycotts of Israeli-related events, including the Eurovision Song Contest and other international football matches.

This situation, which began with Peretz replacing Bazunu on the Southampton bench, has escalated into an international incident reflecting the political tensions surrounding Israel in global sports.
