Families Oppose Simchat Torah Celebrations at Nova Festival Massacre Site

The Jewish National Fund (KKL) has requested that Israeli police and fire services deny permission for Simchat Torah celebrations at the site of the Nova music festival in the Re'im Forest. This area was the scene of the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, where hundreds were killed. The KKL's action follows strong opposition from families of victims who lost loved ones at the festival.

Last year, celebrations including prayers and meals were held at the site during the holiday, with some participants staying overnight. However, for many bereaved families, the festive nature of Simchat Torah clashes with the solemnity of the location. Omri Rahum, whose sister, brother-in-law, and uncle were murdered at the Nova festival, stated that the site should be treated as a place of remembrance and mourning.

The KKL also emphasized that organizing events of this nature requires specific permits and aims to prevent unapproved structures or gatherings. The issue is particularly sensitive in Israel, as the October 7th attacks occurred on Simchat Torah. The Re'im site has since become a significant memorial, visited by victims' families, survivors, and various delegations.
