Former Maccabi Tel Aviv Coach Jokanovic Appointed New Basel Manager
Slaviša Jokanović has been officially appointed as the new head coach of Swiss club Basel until the end of the season. The 58-year-old Serbian-Spanish manager most recently coached Al-Nassr in Dubai before taking on his new role in Switzerland.
Jokanović has a previous connection to Israeli football, having managed Maccabi Tel Aviv. He led the Israeli club to qualification for the Champions League group stage in the 2015/16 season. Following this achievement, he moved to Fulham in England, having spent only half a season in Israel.
Notably, Maccabi Tel Aviv eliminated Basel in the Champions League playoff round en route to the group stage, with a 2-2 draw away and a 1-1 draw at Bloomfield Stadium, when the away goals rule was still in effect. Jokanović's appointment now brings him full circle, managing a team against which he secured one of the most significant achievements of his coaching career.
