Court Reduces Detention of Man Who Threw Bottle at Naftali Bennett
A Tel Aviv District Court on Friday accepted an appeal and reduced the detention period for a suspect accused of throwing an object at former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett during a campaign event in Bnei Brak. The suspect's detention was extended until Sunday, September 27, a reduction from the previous remand order by a lower court which had set his release for Monday, September 28.
The incident occurred Thursday evening at "Moti's Tcholentia" restaurant in Bnei Brak, where Bennett, chairman of the "Achva" party, was meeting with yeshiva students and young Haredim as part of his election campaign. According to reports, the atmosphere changed when extremist activists gathered at the venue.
During the ensuing commotion, a glass bottle was thrown toward Bennett. Police stated that the projectile did not hit the public figure. However, Bennett's "Achva" party claimed that two objects were thrown, one of which struck a female staff member on the head, requiring immediate medical attention.
The suspect was arrested Thursday night by police and Border Police officers from Bnei Brak-Ramat Gan station. He was interrogated and detained. Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. The suspect is scheduled for release on Sunday, following the district court's decision.
