Man Charged with Murdering Witness to Prevent Testimony

The Haifa District Prosecutor's Office has filed an indictment against a 24-year-old man from Bir al-Maksur for the aggravated murder of Hashem Hajirat. Hajirat was a key witness in the murder case of Ali Sawa'ed in Shfaram and had also been injured in that incident. The indictment alleges that Hajirat was killed specifically to prevent him from testifying in the ongoing criminal proceedings related to Sawa'ed's murder.

According to the indictment, filed by prosecutor Yaniv Zohar, Hajirat was questioned as a witness following Sawa'ed's death and was expected to provide testimony at trial. The defendant, along with an unidentified accomplice, allegedly planned to ambush Hajirat near his home in Shfaram to prevent his testimony and obstruct the judicial process. They reportedly armed themselves and waited near Hajirat's residence before dawn.

When Hajirat emerged from his home and entered his vehicle, the two men allegedly blocked his path. One of them fired at least nine bullets at close range, fatally wounding Hajirat. The perpetrators then fled the scene and hid the vehicle they used.

Following the murder, the defendant reportedly obtained gasoline and returned to the scene intending to burn the vehicle to destroy evidence linking him to the crime. However, police officers present at the location apprehended him before he could carry out the act. The indictment includes charges of aggravated murder, citing a specific provision related to killing a witness to prevent testimony, as well as weapons offenses, attempted arson, and attempted evidence destruction.

The prosecution has requested that the defendant be held in custody until the conclusion of legal proceedings. This marks the second time the prosecution has filed an indictment for murder under this aggravated circumstance, highlighting the dual harm of killing a witness: the loss of a human life and the damage to the legal system's ability to uncover the truth.
